The Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), through its International Relations Office (DRI), hosted the minicourse Special Topics: Mining and Sustainability from July 7 to 17. The initiative brought together students and faculty members from UFOP and Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL), Austria.
It featured academic activities, lectures, workshops, and technical visits. UFOP professors from various areas contributed to discussions on topics such as socio-environmental transparency, energy transition, impact assessment, governance, and geotechnical safety in mining. The activities were held across the Ouro Preto and Mariana campuses.
The minicourse aimed to foster critical reflection on the challenges and sustainability of contemporary mining, through an interdisciplinary and international lens, while introducing UFOP to its partner institution. The itinerary also included cultural and educational visits to the Inhotim Institute in Brumadinho, the Mariana Museum, and historical tours in Ouro Preto and Mariana.
