The Consul General of Canada in Rio de Janeiro, Mr. David Verbiwski, also responsible for the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, and the Commercial Attaché of the Canadian Office in Belo Horizonte, Mr. Franz Brandenberger, visited UFOP last Monday, February 14. The visit was part of the Consul's official agenda in Ouro Preto, who also had been at the Gorceix Foundation and in the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais (IFMG).
The aim of visiting UFOP was the strengthening of the relations between the institution and Canada, and it started with a meeting at UFOP Rector’s Office, with the participation of the Rector, Prof. Cláudia Aparecida Marliére de Lima, the Vice-Rector, Prof. Hermínio Arias Nalini Júnior, the Associate Dean of Research, Graduate Studies, and Innovation, Prof. Thiago Cazati, the Director of the International Relations Office, MSc. Jaqueline Schultz, the Coordinator of International Agreements and Mobility, Mr. Anderson Gamarano, and a faculty member from the Department of Statistics and Applied Economics Graduation Program, Prof. Ivair Ramos Silva.
During the meeting, the Director of the International Relations Office, Jaqueline Schultz, made a brief presentation about UFOP, focusing on the recent cooperation agreement signed with the Canadian institution Lakehead University, and on the agreement to be signed soon with the University of Calgary. Moreover, Prof. Ivair Silva explained briefly the support given to the Public Health Agency of Canada regarding the monitoring of adverse events from Covid-19 vaccination using the Sequential package. It was also discussed the possibility of cooperation through the EMBRAPII (Brazilian Company of Research and Industrial Innovation), considering a unit at UFOP which focuses on Mining and Sustainability and the agreement signed with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC).
In his speech, the Consul talked briefly about the 80 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Canada and about Canada's priorities concerning its foreign policy, which includes the elimination of poverty, the propagation of favorable business relations, and the impacts of climate change. The Consul David Verbiwski made himself available to assist UFOP in the cooperation strengthening with Canada, and emphasized: "I've lived for 11 years at the Lake Superior's region, where the Lakehead University is placed, and I'm glad to know that UFOP has an agreement with this important institution".
The Rector Cláudia Marliére appreciated the visit of the Consul David Verbiwski and the Commercial Attaché Franz Brandenberger at UFOP, and pointed out that "the support from the Canadian Office in Belo Horizonte has been essential for the approximation with the Canadian institutions and for the strengthening of UFOP's internationalization".
